Summary of the House Committee Version of the Bill

SB 294 -- CORPORATE NAME RESERVATIONS

SPONSOR: Barnitz (Smith, 150)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Judiciary
by a vote of 14 to 0.

Currently, the Secretary of State reserves a not-for-profit
corporate name for an applicant's exclusive use for a 60-day
period and allows unlimited renewals. This bill makes the
holding period for not-for-profit and for-profit corporate name
reservations uniform by limiting the total duration for which a
not-for-profit corporate name can be reserved to 180 days.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2010, FY 2011, and
FY 2012.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill will standardize the
time limit for name reservation for non-profit and for-profit
corporations and will prevent people from reserving names they
don't intend to use.

Testifying for the bill were Senator Barnitz; and Office of the
Secretary of State.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
